The difference between movement and momentum.

Updated: 13 hours ago

“Impossible goals don’t require more effort — they require a new strategy.”

🖤 From Jen: The Impossible Goal.

Hi BEAUTISTA fam.

I started reading a new book this week — The Science of Scaling — and, like clockwork, Matt immediately knew what was coming. 😂 Because anytime I read something and I'm learning something great,  I turn into that person. Calling him every three minutes. Voice notes. “Wait, listen to this.” “Okay but WHAT IF…”

This one got me thinking about focus in a totally different way. BEAUTISTA is growing. And the truth is, we serve a lot of people — students, professionals, schools, businesses, brands. Which is beautiful… and also dangerous. Because when you can do a lot of things, it’s really easy to start doing too many things. You start chasing progress in every direction instead of momentum in one.

What this book challenges — hard — is the way we’re taught to set goals. We’re told to be realistic. Achievable. Measurable. Safe. Goals you can reasonably hit.

And the authors basically say… that’s exactly why most people stay stuck. They talk about setting impossible goals. Not because you expect to hit them tomorrow — but because impossible goals force you to think differently today. They collapse old patterns. They expose inefficiencies. They make your current strategy completely irrelevant.

A realistic goal asks: “How do I do a little more of what I’m already doing?” An impossible goal asks: “What would I have to stop doing entirely?” “What actually matters?” “What’s the one direction everything should point?”

Let’s say a salon owner says, “I want to grow revenue steadily this year.” Great goal. Safe goal. Realistic goal. What happens next? They tweak pricing. Add a service. Run a promo. Post more. Ask the team to “do better.” Incremental changes.

Now compare that to this goal: “I want to 10X my salon revenue.” Immediately, your brain goes, “Okay… we can’t just do more of everything.” A 10X goal doesn’t allow clutter. It forces clarity. You’d have to ask questions like:

– Which services actually drive profit?

– Which menu items look nice but drain time and energy?

– What do clients come back for again and again?

– Where do we already win

— and why?

You’d double down on:

– High-converting services

– Services with strong retail attachment

– Services that build loyalty, not just one-off visits

Then everything would organize around those services:

– Marketing campaigns spotlighting them

– Education focused on mastering them

– Incentives aligned to selling and delivering them

– Systems built to protect time and consistency

Because when you aim for something big enough — something that can’t be reached by working harder or adding more — you’re forced to simplify. You are forced to think outside of the box. You don’t get to stack more tasks. You have to choose. Ruthlessly. And here’s the part I loved most: Impossible goals don’t create pressure — they create clarity.

That shift alone? That’s where 10x happens. Not from grinding harder. From deciding what actually deserves your energy. So if you’re feeling stretched… distracted… busy but not quite moving — maybe the answer isn’t a better to-do list or a more realistic goal. Maybe it’s permission to think bigger than your current rules allow.

Here's to setting impossible goals and growing 10X in 2026.

xoxo

🚀 The Shift: Weekly Mindset + Strategy Upgrade.

Setting Your Impossible Goal.

Most goal-setting starts with the same question: “What feels realistic?” The book, The Science of Scaling flips that question completely. Instead, it asks: “What goal would force me to think differently?”

That question applies whether you’re a student, a professional behind the chair, or a business owner building something bigger.

1. Start with a goal that breaks your current strategy

An impossible goal isn’t meant to feel safe.

Examples:

  • “10X revenue”

  • “Work fewer days and make more money”

  • “Become the go-to salon for one specialty”

  • “Get hired into a salon or brand I once thought was out of reach”

If your brain immediately starts listing all the reasons it won’t work… you picked the right goal.

That discomfort is the signal that your current way of thinking won’t get you there.

2. Ask the most important question: what would I have to stop?

This is where everything changes. Impossible goals don’t ask: What should I add?”

They ask:

  • What can’t come with me?

  • What services, habits, or systems are actually slowing me down?

  • What looks busy but isn’t building anything?

In a salon, this often means:

  • Cutting menu items that drain time but don’t drive profit

  • Letting go of “we’ve always done it this way” services

  • Saying no to clients who don’t align with where you’re going

This step is about subtraction, not addition.

3. Identify the thing that already works - and amplify it.

Every business already has leverage.

  • The service clients rebook without hesitation

  • The offer that drives retail naturally

  • The experience people talk about and refer

Instead of improving everything by 5%, you improve one thing by 10X. This is where focus replaces hustle.

4. Align systems, people, time and incentives to that goal

Once the goal is clear, everything else falls into place:

  • Education supports the high-impact services/Skill

  • Marketing tells one clear story

  • Incentives reward the behavior that drives growth

  • Schedules protect energy and consistency

  • Content and portfolio tell one clear story

  • Opportunities align with where you’re headed

This is how growth stops feeling chaotic.

5. Make decisions like the person who already achieved the goal

The book uses a football example that says it perfectly:Two quarterbacks. Two goals.

  • One wants to make the most money.

  • One wants to win the most Super Bowls.

Neither is wrong — but they make completely different decisions.

Same industry. Same position. Totally different strategies.

Your impossible goal defines:

  • What you say yes to

  • What you protect

  • What you walk away from

And that’s the real shift.

The Takeaway

Impossible goals don’t make life harder. They make decisions clearer. They don’t demand more energy — they demand better direction. And once direction is clear… growth follows.

💻 Tech-Forward:

Where tech meets beauty (and your next big move begins).

The AI Prompt That Helped Me Take Action (Not Just Notes)

Confession: I don’t read books quietly. I read them and immediately start thinking, “Okay… how do I actually apply this?” So after reading The Science of Scaling (and any other book I read), I use AI as a mentor.

I asked AI to think like the authors and help me act.

The Prompt I Used 👇

“Act as the authors of The Science of Scaling. Be my mentor. Based on what you teach about impossible goals and focus, help me apply this to my business right now. What should I stop doing, double down on, and simplify? Before giving me a plan, ask me the questions you need to understand my goals, constraints, data, and current strategy. Once you have that, help me design a focused plan that aligns with an impossible goal — not incremental progress.”

Why This Works

  • It turns insight into direction

  • It forces decisions instead of more information

  • It helps you move forward, not just feel inspired

Try swapping in your own context:

For salon owners

“Act as a business scaling expert. Based on my goal to grow revenue without burnout, what services should I focus on — and which should I stop offering?”

For beauty professionals

“Act as a career mentor in the beauty industry. Based on my goal, what skills and opportunities should I prioritize this year?”

For students

“Act as a beauty industry hiring manager. Based on what salons actually look for, what should I be building now to stand out?”

What we're learning from Hiring  Funnels:

After running dozens of premium hiring funnels across salons, suites, franchises, and studios — and spending $hundreds of thousands in Meta ad data — here’s the clearest takeaway:

Hiring isn’t the biggest cost. Not hiring is.

Most owners don’t feel the loss all at once. It leaks quietly — chair by chair, week by week — until it shows up as burnout, overbooked staff, and stalled growth. That’s exactly why we built the Empty Chair Calculator.

📉 The Cost of Waiting (Real Examples)

One owner ran the numbers and discovered:

  • $15,000 lost every week

  • $64,950 lost every month

  • $780,000 lost per year

That wasn’t a big chain. That was simply 10 empty chairs, an average ticket, and missed appointments adding up fast.

Another owner with just one empty chair uncovered:

  • $66,300 in annual lost revenue

  • From a single missing stylist they assumed they’d “replace eventually"

What the Data Keeps Confirming

Across our funnels, we consistently see:

  • Strong impressions and clicks

  • Stylists are looking

  • Conversations are happening

Where it breaks down isn’t interest — it’s speed, clarity, and follow-up.

Empty chairs don’t stay empty because talent doesn’t exist. They stay empty because:

  • The story doesn’t land

  • The follow-up is slow

  • The role isn’t clear

  • Or the owner is already stretched too thin to chase DMs

That’s not a motivation issue. That’s a system gap.

💡 The Shift We’re Seeing in 2026

The smartest owners aren’t asking: “How do I spend less on hiring?” They’re asking: “How much is not hiring costing me — every week I wait?” That mindset shift is everything. Because when you see the loss clearly, investing in visibility, speed, and systems stops feeling risky — and starts feeling obvious.

Want to See Your Number?

If you’ve ever said:

  • “We’ll hire when the right person shows up”

  • “I don’t want to spend money unless it guarantees a hire”

  • “We’re managing… for now”

Run the calculator. Not to commit to anything. Just to understand what your empty chairs are already costing you. Clarity changes decisions. Data removes emotion. And that’s how real hiring momentum starts.

🔦 BEAUTISTA Spotlight

Danielle Barto

Colorado Springs, CO• Licensed Beauty Professional

Based in Colorado Springs, Danielle is a seasoned hairstylist with 13 years behind the chair and a clear specialty sweet spot: Brazilian Blowouts, lived-in color, and K18 treatments that actually restore hair—not just mask damage. Her work is polished but personal, technical yet effortless, the kind of hair that grows out beautifully and makes clients feel like themselves on their best day.

What stands out immediately when you land on Danielle’s BEAUTISTA portfolio isn’t just her work—it’s her commitment to growth. In 2025 alone, she earned an impressive lineup of certifications and insider recognitions across Wella, Pravana, Rusk, and Brazilian Blowout, including multiple Wella Insider distinctions (Color, Cut, Creative Color, Care, Trend, and Barber). That level of continued education signals something important: this is a stylist who takes her craft seriously and stays ahead of the curve.

Danielle’s “why” runs deeper than trends. She’s driven by learning, teaching, and sharing knowledge—with clients and fellow stylists alike. That educator mindset shows up in how she consults, how she customizes services, and how confidently she helps people embrace their natural beauty.

Outside the salon, she’s a parent, traveler, painter, and music lover—pulling inspiration from real life and translating it into creative, thoughtful work behind the chair.

Subtle pro takeaway: Stylists who consistently invest in education tend to build stronger trust, better results, and longer-term client loyalty—and Danielle is a great example of that in action.

💡 BEAUTISTA Tips & Tricks

The Placement Tracking Upgrade Schools Have Been Asking For

Quick heads up for BEAUTISTA schools 👀 This is something new we’re rolling out — and it’s a big one. We’ve been quietly building a Placement Tracking Dashboard that helps schools track where graduates land without endless phone calls, emails, or spreadsheets.

Think:

  • Automatic job detection

  • Digital proof of placement

  • Ready-to-export reports by class or cohort

  • All living inside your BEAUTISTA School Portal

In other words: placement reporting that actually reflects today’s reality.

Right now, early access is being turned on intentionally, school by school — so we can plan properly for 2026 and make sure each school is set up the right way.

👉 If you’re a school leader and want to:

  • See how the Placement Dashboard works

  • Understand how auto-find placement tracking fits into your reporting

  • Get ahead of 2026 planning

Book time with Jeneanne to walk through it and secure early access. This is one of those upgrades that doesn’t add more work — it removes it. More details coming soon… but early access is already moving.
