Hey BEAUTISTA Fam,


One question has never gone away in all my years in beauty: “How do I find talent?”


That question is why Matt and I created BEAUTISTA (back when it was Canvas ME). Owners were hurting—walkouts, cultures stretched thin because the top earner wasn’t a fit but no one wanted to let go, guests being turned away because there weren’t enough people to serve them. The pain was obvious. The solution seemed obvious too: portfolios and humanizing the business.


So when we dropped everything to build BEAUTISTA back in 2018, we thought everyone would jump on board. But here’s what we’ve learned: even when the problem is blaring, changing habits takes time, proof, and a lot of education.


Take recruitment. On the big job boards—Indeed, ZipRecruiter, Craigslist—your inbox floods with “applicants,” but eight out of ten aren’t even licensed. The rest barely remember applying. Interview no-shows are sky high because there’s no real digital connection pulling them in.


This is where what we call Burnt Out Brenda lives. Burnt out Brenda is doing everything she thinks she’s supposed to do—posting to job boards, calling, messaging—but she’s still not seeing results. Why? Because no one is driving Intentional traffic to her career page the way she drives traffic to her salon page. And without that, conversions just don’t happen. 


That’s exactly why we built BEAUTISTA: to get our industry off those platforms and onto a system designed for beauty—a portfolio-first, humanized, proven funnel. And even then, the same principle applies: posting alone isn’t enough. Just like you drive traffic to your website to book clients, you must drive intentional traffic to your career opportunity. Without it, nothing converts.  Business owners KNOW they have to drive traffic to their salon pages so that consumers book with them - but  for some reason that doesn't translate when they think about their career opportunity pages.


And honestly—that’s not just a business-owner issue. It’s the same lesson for pros building their clientele, students building a reputation, or educators building a following: you can’t just post once and wait. You have to drive intentional traffic to your page, your portfolio, your opportunity. Without it, nothing converts.


The truth is, building BEAUTISTA has been years of proving, educating, and reshaping habits. But the dent is there. Owners are waking up to recruitment marketing. And when they lean in, they’re amazed.


It took us years to prove this model out, and it’s still a mindset shift for many. But when owners, pros, and students lean in, they see it: recruitment, client-building, even social media—it all follows the same law. Posting is step one. Driving intentional traffic and connection is the game.


That’s the entrepreneurial truth I want to share: even when the problem is obvious, the solution takes time, grit, and education to land.

What we're learning from Hiring  Funnels: 

Without RELEVANT traffic, nothing converts.


Posting your opportunity is step one. But it’s the same as a brand-new website—if nobody visits, nothing happens.


Here’s the big difference:

  • On job boards like Indeed, 80% of applicants aren’t even licensed. Most of the rest ghost before the interview.

  • On BEAUTISTA, the traffic is different: every impression is a licensed, relevant beauty pro.

Across salon campaigns, we’ve driven hundreds of thousands of licensed pros to real opportunities. And here’s the funnel math that matters: once they apply, it takes about 6 prequalified applicants to land 1 hire.
