Are you living in the gap or the gain?

“The gap creates pressure. The gain creates power.”
🖤 From Jen: The Gap or The Gain? |
Hi BEAUTISTA fam. Earlier this week, my daughter came to me with this look on her face — the kind that tells you something just clicked. Having a child in high school is wild. You’re watching real-time awakenings happen. Social dynamics. Comparison. Identity. Perspective. It’s like reliving your own teenage years but with a more seasoned brain. She said, “Mom… one of my friends has everything. Her parents give her everything she could ever want. And she’s always sad. She’s always upset. She’s always crying about something. I don’t get it.” And there it was. The opening. Because that moment isn’t about teenagers. It’s about humans. This whole week has felt wrapped in reminders about this exact thing. Matt and I were guests on Elizabeth Faye’s podcast talking about hiring and recruiting — but what we really ended up talking about was mindset. Gratitude. Reaching your highest potential. And how “having” isn’t the same as fulfillment. You can have the job. You can have the chair filled. You can have the house. You can have the followers. You can hit the revenue goal. and still feel like something is missing. Because happiness doesn’t live in things. It lives in perspective. I’ve been reading a new book and the author talks about living in “the gap” versus living in “the gain.” And it was the perfect language to give my daughter. You can live in the gap — constantly looking at what you don’t have yet. What’s missing. What’s next. What’s bigger. What someone else has that you don’t. Or you can live in the gain — looking backward at how far you’ve come. What you’ve built. What you’ve survived. What you’ve learned. What you once prayed for that is now your normal. When you live in the gap, you focus on lack. It keeps you stuck in this quiet dissatisfaction. Even when you achieve something, your brain immediately moves the goalpost. As high achievers — and I know so many of you are — this one is hard. We set a goal. We hit the goal. And instead of celebrating it, we immediately set a higher one. I’m not saying don’t raise the ceiling. You absolutely should. Growth matters. Expansion matters. But do it while living in the gain. Honor what you’ve accomplished. See it. Feel it. Let it register. The author shared a story that made me laugh because it felt so real. He took his four kids to a theme park. His son wanted a cookie. That was the goal. “I want a cookie!” So he bought one and split it among the kids. His son ate his piece and immediately started complaining that it was too small. He got the cookie. Goal achieved. And within seconds, he was back in the gap. How many times do we do this? We wanted the fully booked schedule. Then we complain about being tired. We wanted the promotion. Then we stress about the responsibility. We wanted the revenue milestone. Then we fixate on the next one. We prayed for the life we now rush through. Living in the gap keeps us from experiencing happiness in real time. It keeps us in comparison. It keeps us in “not enough.” Living in the gain creates momentum. Gratitude. Excitement. A growth trajectory that feels expansive instead of exhausting. So this week, I asked my daughter to try something simple. Instead of looking at what her friend has, or what she doesn’t have, look at her own gain. Her friendships. Her growth. Her strength. Her awareness. Even having the insight to question it — that’s gain. And I’m asking you the same. When was the last time you truly looked back at how far you’ve come? Not your next target. Not your next launch. Not your next hire. Just… your progress. You can strive. You can expand. You can build the empire. But build it from abundance, not from lack. Because having “everything” doesn’t guarantee happiness. Perspective does. xoxo -Jen Martinelli ______________________________________________________________________________ 🚀 The Shift: Weekly Mindset + Strategy Upgrade.Live in the Gain (Without Losing Your Edge) 🚀 The Shift: Measure Backward High achievers have a pattern. We measure ourselves against the ideal. The future version. The bigger number. The next milestone. And when you measure yourself against an ideal, you will always feel behind because the ideal keeps moving. You hit the goal, and within seconds your brain replaces it with a higher one. That’s the gap. And if you’re ambitious, it’s your default setting. The alternative is living in the gain. Instead of measuring yourself against who you want to become, you measure against who you used to be. You measure backward. That’s where confidence lives. That’s where momentum builds. So here’s your actual practice this week:
This isn’t about lowering your ambition. It’s about recalibrating your perspective. The gain builds confidence. The gap builds anxiety. When you regularly measure backward — not once, but consistently — you remind yourself that you are progressing. You create stability before expansion. Measure backward. Then build forward from that energy. That’s the shift. ______________________________________________________________________________ 🎙️ In Case You Missed It (ICYMI)![]() The Classes That Moved the NeedleLast week wasn’t just education. Even with social and video everywhere, email still delivers exceptional ROI when done with intention. That’s because people actually opted in to hear from you, and your messages land in a space they check daily — often multiple times a day. But here’s the real shift in 2026: AI and true personalization are now core parts of email performance — not optional add-ons. Generative AI isn’t just writing your copy; it’s helping power segmentation, timing, and deeper personalization that drives revenue. Let’s break down what that actually means for you and your beauty business: 📈 Metrics That Matter NowOpen rates are useful, but they aren’t the full story anymore. In 2026 the average open rate sits around ~40–45%, which signals a healthy baseline for engaged lists. But with Apple’s privacy protections and AI filtering inbox behavior, open rates alone can be misleading. What you really want to watch are:
Tracking these gives you real revenue insight, not just vanity stats. 🤖 How AI Is Changing Email MarketingAI isn’t just for subject lines anymore. It’s redefining: Personalization at scale. AI algorithms can automatically segment your audience based on behavior — not just a tag or list they’re on. This means someone who clicked “color education” gets different content than someone who always reads hiring tips. That’s deep personalization — and it drives higher CTRs and conversions. Predictive send times. Forget blanket schedules. AI can analyze past opens and clicks to determine when each individual subscriber is most likely to engage — not just your whole list. That means smarter delivery and less noise. AI-assisted creation. Tools can now generate entire email drafts, optimize subject lines, and even tailor content to different audience segments — all with prompts you control. This saves you time and often improves results. Across industries, marketers who use AI-generated content and optimization see open and click rates improve, which translates into tangible revenue gains. 📬 Practical Ways to Use These Trends This Week
The Real InsightEmail marketing in 2026 isn’t about more messages. It’s about smarter messages — delivered to the right person at the right time with relevant content. AI helps you do that without burning more time or energy. And when your emails feel relevant and human, they don’t just get opened — they drive action that grows your revenue. _______________________________________________________________________________ ![]() What we're learning from Hiring Funnels: There’s something we’ve been noticing inside campaigns lately, and it’s subtle but powerful. Salons hiring from the gap behave very differently than salons hiring from the gain — and you can actually see it in the performance. When a business is hiring from the gap, the energy feels urgent and reactive. It’s “we just need someone.” The job post focuses on filling a hole. The copy lists demands. The tone feels tight. Even if it’s unintentional, applicants sense that pressure almost immediately. When a business is hiring from the gain, the positioning shifts. The message highlights growth, opportunity, culture, and standards. It communicates, “We’re building something strong, and we’re inviting the right person into it.” Same open chair. Very different energy. Very different results. The funnel data keeps reinforcing something else too. Video builds belief. Static drives action. But positioning drives quality. The strongest campaigns follow a sequence. Culture-driven video warms the audience first. It shows leadership. It shows the space. It communicates momentum. Candidates don’t always apply immediately, but they remember it. Then later, when they see a clean, clear, static opportunity with simple next steps, they convert. It’s not one touch. It’s awareness to familiarity to trust to action. Here’s the deeper insight: when salons communicate from scarcity, application quality drops. When they communicate from strength, quality improves. It doesn’t mean you ignore the empty chair. It means you don’t market from panic. Recruitment isn’t about shouting louder. It’s about sequencing smarter and positioning stronger. If you’re hiring right now, ask yourself: are you communicating a problem, or are you communicating an opportunity? That subtle difference changes everything. 👉Book a 20-min audit with Matt → Optimize your Job ad copy ______________________________________________________________________________ 🔥 What’s Happening:Virtual Live Events You Don’t Want to Miss![]() Next Live Virtual Classes Stay Sharp. Powered by Intention.Joan Mary RodriguezBrooksville, FL👉 Explore Joan Mary’s portfolio on BEAUTISTA Two years behind the chair. That’s it. And already, Joan Mary Rodriguez isn’t moving like someone “new.” She’s moving like someone who understands the long game. Joan graduated from Paul Mitchell The School Tampa with 98% attendance — which already tells you something. Not just about discipline, but about commitment. She didn’t just show up. She leaned in. She found her passion in product knowledge, haircutting, styling, and education — and she hasn’t stopped building since. Today, she’s technically a booth renter, the owner of Tresses By Joan Mary, and co-owner of Louie’s Barber Studio in Spring Hill, Florida. That kind of progression in two years doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when someone decides early that growth is a practice, not a phase. What stands out most isn’t just her work — it’s her mindset. “I’m a firm believer in you never stop learning.” That’s gain energy. Joan isn’t measuring herself against stylists who’ve been in the industry for 15 years and feeling behind. She’s measuring against who she was when she first stood behind the chair. She’s stacking certifications, refining her craft, deepening her product knowledge, and building a brand rooted in care. She’s also passionate about sharing what she learns. That’s leadership before the title. She doesn’t see education as something you consume — she sees it as something you pass on. Her portfolio reflects that evolution. Real work. Brand alignment. Preferred partners like Paul Mitchell, Redken, Matrix, Pureology, Olaplex. Video. Personality. Intention. This is what happens when a professional doesn’t wait ten years to start building their brand. They build while they grow. But your strongest marketing asset is usually already inside your building: your high-performing, happy team. Take a look at your website’s “Meet the Team” page. What does someone actually see when they click it? For many salons/spas, it’s a static headshot and a short bio that hasn’t been updated in years. Maybe there’s an Instagram link. Maybe not. Meanwhile, clients today want to see real work. They want certifications, specialties, video, personality, and proof before they ever sit in the chair. Here’s the simple upgrade. Have each team member create a BEAUTISTA portfolio and link directly to it from your Meet the Team page. Instead of you constantly chasing updated bios and new photos, your stylists manage their own living portfolio. They can upload fresh work, add certifications from recent classes, showcase specializations, and even include video at any time. No waiting. No website edits. No outdated information. It also supports revenue immediately. Each stylist can add their “Book Now” button directly to their BEAUTISTA portfolio. That means a client can view their work, feel confident in their expertise, and schedule in the same flow. It shortens the path from inspiration to appointment. This move strengthens recruitment too. Prospective hires see a team that looks elevated and professional. Clients see real artistry and credentials in one place. Your website becomes dynamic without you having to constantly update it. The beauty businesses that stand out right now aren’t just marketing services. They’re showcasing people. And when your artists are visible, updated, and proud of their work, your marketing becomes human — which is what actually converts. _______________________________________________________________________________ 💌 Pass It OnKnow someone who needs this kind of real talk in their beauty journey?
